Maddy's First Bath

Maddy had her first bath.   At first she didn't really like the water but after she got used to it, she seemed to have a good time.   She is going to have to love the water in this family.  She has the funniest facial expressions for everything.   I love being her mom.

December 8, 2013
     1:54 a.m.     6lbs 4 oz.  18 inches

I knew when I woke up that something VERY special was going to happen this day.
9:30 a.m.  I started having contractions in the morning.  Nothing big.  Just felt like cramps.  Another at 1030.  And another at 1130 and 12. I decided to go lay in my bed and time the contractions.   They were sporadic at first.   15 mins apart, 10 mins apart, 20 mins apart.   Some were small and some were big.  Not really painful but my stomach would tighten up.  I didn't know if i should even count the small ones because they were so brief.  My mom was telling me how her labor pains were never painful and so she never really knew when she was in labor.
4 pm- Contractions were pretty consistent around 10 mins apart so we called labor and delivery.  They said we could come in but it might just be false labor so it was up to us.  We started to drive to kaiser which is about an hour from our house.

530pm- Arrived at Kaiser hospital.  They put us in a room and hooked me up to a monitor to check my contractions and Maddy’s heartbeat.  I was dilated to  a 1.  My contractions were now 6 minutes a part.   My mom told the midwife, Sam, and a nurse named Jo her birthing stories and how fast her babies came.  They decided to let me walk around and check me in a few hours. Carlos and I walked around the hallway and we had to stop every 4 minutes to breathe though a contraction.  The intensity was getting stronger.

8pm- When they checked me again there was no change.  I was still a 1. They were supposed to send me home according to their protocal rules but they were both going home and decided to let the next doctor on duty make the call.  They had the same feeling I did, this baby was coming tonight.
Carlos and I would walk around the birthing floor.   We had to stop about every 3 minutes for a contraction.  I would have to hug him while he told me to breathe. They were getting stronger ( more painful).  I finally couldn't take it anymore so I went to lay in the bed.
9 pm- The new nurse and doctor came in and checked me.  I was still a 1.  They were adamant about sending me home.   I refused to go home.   I was crying because the pain was so bad.  The doctor was telling me these contractions could go on for weeks without any change.   REALLY!  Contractions that are 3 minutes apart that make me cry.  I asked her what my other option was other than going home.   She said I could take some pain medicine and then they would check me again in 4 hours after the medicine wore off.  I just knew it was the real thing.   There was no way I was going home.
10 pm- The medicine only worked for about 30 mins. I took a small nap, Carlos fell asleep and my mom disappeared into the hallway (I know from having my knee surgeries that pain medicine just doesn’t work on me.  That’s why I didn’t ask for an epidural.  I had one with a knee surgery and it didn’t work.  The needle in my back was excruciatingly painful though)   The rest of the contractions after that were more and more painful.  I had to grip the edge of the bed and listen to Carlos tell me to breathe. I have no idea how much time went by.  One of the contractions was so bad that it made me throw up.
12:30 am After that I had Carlos go get the nurse so I could ask for an epidural or something to ease the pain.  I was completely over the pain.  Little did I know it would only get worse.    The nurse Jo came in, she said she couldn’t find the doctor so she was going to check me.  I was dilated to a 3 by then.  She told me to take a shower and sit on the medicine ball.  This would help me relax through the pain.  Then she said when I got out of the shower, I could get an epideral and have my IV for my penicillin.  (I tested positive for Strep beta, it’s only harmful for the baby in the birthing canal so they give the mom antibiotics before birth so the baby doesn’t get meningitis)
12:45 Shower 45 min.  PAIN
1:20 Left the shower.  Carlos and Jo had to pretty much carry me to the bed.  She checked me again and I was ready to deliver. I had my eyes closed for the rest of the time. More and more voices kept telling me what to do.  All I could do was try to do whatever people were screaming at me to do.  Breathing was hard to do.  Screaming was easy to do.  PAIN

1:54 am  Maddy arrives in the world.   She wasn’t crying like in the movies.  This worried me.  But a little voice told me she was going to be okay. I instantly calmed down.   They took her to warming station.  They put some hoses in her throat, gave her some oxygen, and cleaned her off a little.  She had pooped while she was in the birthing canal, and both of our heart rates were dropping while she was there.  That’s why they wanted me to push so bad.  Because she came so fast, I tore and they had to stitch me up.

1:59 I finally heard her cry.  Carlos went over to check her out.   He came back, He said, “we did it babe” and gave me a high five.  They brought her over to me and laid her on my chest.   LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.

So many things could have gone wrong. But they didn’t.  Carlos was a great coach.  I couldn’t have gotten through those contractions without him.  We are extremely blessed by our Heavenly Father for sending us such a beautiful angel.
